Greentown Labs sprung from a grassroots cluster start-ups seeking low-cost clean energy protyping space near MIT in the summer of 2010. The resulting collaboration between companies proved so successful that in 2011 the founders decided to expand the vision into a full-blown incubator space for clean technology start-ups. Although Greentown Labs has only been open for a very short time (May 2011) it's 14,000 square feet now provides a home for (10) start-up companies - already accounting for 40+ full‐time jobs clean energy jobs.
Team
Jason Hanna, Managing Director - Jason is the founder of Coincident, an energy management start-up recently selected by the Department of Energy for their innovative approach to creating interoperability between smart-grid connected devices. To date he has raised $1.5M of funding for Coincident and is preparing a product beta for mid-year 2011. Previously Jason led the B2B Solutions and Enterprise Platforms Team at EMC Corporation and was responsible for implementing systems that transacted more than $1B USD annually. Jason completed his undergraduate work at Iowa State University and holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering.
Sorin Grama, Director - Sorin is a co-founder at Promethean Power, a start-up building solar refrigeration units for commercial cold-storage applications in off-grid and partially electrified areas of developing countries. Sorin emigrated from Romania in 1987 and attended Ohio State University where he completed a B.S. Electrical Engineering degree with highest honors. Following graduation he worked in Northern California as a sales manager for National Instruments. Sorin moved to Boston in 2006 to attend MIT where he completed a Masters of Science in Engineering & Management degree with a thesis on solar thin-film PV industry dynamics.
Adam Rein, Director - Adam Rein is a co-founder at Altaeros Energies, an early-stage company developing a low cost, rapid deployment wind turbine for remote locations. Previously, Adam worked as a strategy consultant for large corporations and international nonprofits, including work helping develop the biofuels sector in southern Africa. Adam’s past research has covered the Philippines energy policy, the use of microfinance to spur clean energy technology in the developing world, and the market for home energy efficiency products and services. Adam holds an M.B.A. from MIT Sloan and an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
Sam White, Director - Sam is a co-founder at Promethean Power Sam has several years of foreign and domestic experience in business development and worked In Madrid for 5 years with the Institute of Management Resources. Sam directed Latin American business development for the Boston division of the Economist Intelligence Unit (Economist Group) and was the catalyst for rapid growth and deployment of new business models and technologies in his previous two start-ups, GetConnected and Smartleaf. Sam received his BA from Union College and graduated from GSBI's 2010 class at Santa Clara University.
